book review! - the magnolia sword.

The Magnolia Sword; A Ballad of Mulan - Book Review.

The Magnolia Sword is written by Sherry Thomas and is a stunning novel to read. Thomas' attention to detail and use of language is gorgeous and creates an elegant feel. I found myself reading every line which is rare. As a chronic skim-reader, I often find myself jumping all around the page however in The Magnolia Sword I stuck to each sentence taking in all the beautiful language. As a white person whose only knowledge of the ballad of Mulan is from the Disney animation, I enjoyed reading the in-depth history instead of the simple version.
Hua Mulan is a young woman living in the south of China in 484 AD. She has trained all her life under the careful watch of her disabled father to fight in a duel that every generation must fight. But then the Emperor announces that every house must send one abled bodied man to fight against Rouran Invaders. Mulan answers the call, disguised as her twin brother who passed away when she was little Mulan joins the army and soon an elite team led by a Princeling. Their mission is to uncover a spy and figure out the Rouran Invader's plan before it's too late!!

My favourite character was Mulan. I loved Mulan's character and charm. The story's first-person point of view really helps me understand her internal conflicts and thoughts.

Overall a smashing read and definitely one of my favourite books :)
